Liverpool 2-2 Nottingham Forest: Another Chaotic Draw Leaves Iraola Searching for Control
Liverpool were once again forced to settle for a 2-2 draw as Nottingham Forest held the Reds at Anfield in an entertaining Saturday lunchtime clash.
The result means Liverpool have now drawn their opening two Premier League games under Andoni Iraola by the exact same scoreline, but the performance against Forest was far more complicated than the result suggests.
Forest started the better of the two sides and caused Liverpool problems with their direct approach. Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the 24th minute after Liverpool struggled to deal with a long ball forward. Liverpool gradually grew into the game, with Florian Wirtz looking particularly dangerous, although his first-half effort was ruled out for offside.

After the break, Liverpool finally found their rhythm. Cody Gakpo produced a brilliant piece of individual play before finding Alexander Isak, who finished from close range to score his first Premier League goal for the club.
However, Liverpool’s momentum didn’t last long.
Just ten minutes later, Alisson brought down Neco Williams inside the box and Morgan Gibbs-White converted the resulting penalty to restore Forest’s lead.
Once again, Liverpool were chasing the game.
Iraola’s Changes Make an Impact
The substitutions became a major part of the match. Iraola introduced Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch and Rio Ngumoha, with Dominik Szoboszlai moving into the right-back position. Ronald Araújo and Trey Nyoni were also introduced later.
The changes helped Liverpool regain some control and eventually produced the equaliser.
In the 82nd minute, Florian Wirtz found Víctor Muñoz, who cut inside and unleashed a powerful effort that flew in off the crossbar.
2-2.
For Muñoz, it was a dream way to announce himself on his full Liverpool debut.
Plenty of Positives, But Questions Remain
There were plenty of positives for Iraola. Liverpool showed character to come from behind twice, Isak finally opened his league account, Wirtz continued to look dangerous and Muñoz provided a huge moment off the bench.
However, the defensive issues remain concerning.
Liverpool struggled against Forest’s direct football and repeatedly allowed the visitors to regain momentum after Liverpool had seemingly taken control. The Reds looked dangerous going forward but vulnerable when possession was lost.
That balance will be crucial for Iraola.
Liverpool’s opening two matches have produced four goals scored, four conceded and two points. The attacking potential is obvious, but if they want to compete at the top of the Premier League, they will need to turn these chaotic 2-2 draws into controlled victories.
For now, Iraola’s Liverpool are exciting, unpredictable and full of potential — but they are still learning how to control the chaos.
